The Historic James River E-mail

Imagine paddling the waterways traveled by Pocahontas, Ulysses S. Grant and George Washington. This major artery of commerce serviced local inhabitants since pre-colonial times and remains remarkably unchanged. The gently rolling terrain of tidewater Virginia is where you'll find rich farmland belonging to the plantations that line the waterway's banks. Several of these great properties were the homes to the leaders of this bygone era. By paddling to these colonial and Civil War sites we will gain new perspectives on the relevance the river had to this new nation. We'll enjoy lunch at the site that makes its claim as the first location of Thanksgiving. We will visit several plantations including, if open, Sherwood (home of president John Tyler). And we'll enjoy the waters of Chickahominy Wildlifejamesriver4Management Area. Finishing the trip in Williamsburg gives us an opportunity to stroll the streets of an authentically reconstructed colonial town that served as a hub for the plantations we visited earlier in the week.
