Our Journey to the Center of the Earth... ....an island in time, presenting a panorama of surreal landscapes, rich history and the struggle between man and the environment; it is a destination whose breathtaking beauty invites exploration and overwhelmes with its mystery. Iceland is at once a primordial world and a technical conundrum. It has been a place that demonstrates the dichotomy of the wildness of nature, its taming and harnessing by humanity. These qualities have sparked the imaginations of explorers, adventurers, writers and artisits from the four corners of the world...and in so many ways, it is indeed the earth's center. Take the voyage with H2Outfitters' staff, and cross the seas to the island Republic of Iceland. We'll land in this small country's capitol, Reykjavik, the place of norseman Leif Erikson and his Viking explorers made landfall centuries ago. His statue stands beneath the church towers of Hallgrimskirkja. Leif's era was a time of epic Viking sagas, discoveries, and battles with the gods and demons that inhabited the geo-thermal nooks and crannies scattered across the surface of the island. These "super-natural forces" have since been tamed by the local population and now support the people and the land as alternative energy sources while at the same time providing recreational and theraputic resources as an added bonus. From hiking, skiing, and boating to the relaxation of soaking away the stresses and strains in the plentiful hot springs, the land in and of itself is unequaled as an adventures' paradise. We'll paddle into the country's deep fjords, visit small villages, and get to know the people on an intimate level of culture-to-culture. The locals are self-sufficient, welcoming to voyagers from the sea like ourselves, and always curious about the ancestry of the new friends they meet. Remember, these are people with surnames like Sigurds-son or Olafs-dottir and they want to know who you belong to this in this world! This is their land where the mountains meet the sea, a land that is in a constant state of flux with seismic volcanic action and slow-moving glaciers. The metaphor of fire and ice holds so true in this dynamic environment and is the driving force behind the hospitality and generosity of its people. We'll trek to, and stand on, the surface of a glacier underway, breath air whose crispness will quickly become an aquired taste, and savor the magical light in a land that is for half the year bathed only in shades of twilight. This is the atmosphere of adventure, and discovery, and there is no place like it on this Earth. And so, it might be said that Iceland is an all-encompasing wilderness that not only transcends the conflict between man and nature, but also offers visitors an opportunity to become participants in its daily give and take. Please join us for an exciting journey to this magnificent land of fire and ice, another on our list of Adventures for a Lifetime. NOTE: We are running two versions of this trip. The June trip includes 4 nights camping and 4 nights in guesthouse/hotels and is based solely in the West Fjords. The Tuscan Islands and... ....the Sensations of Chianti When the goddess of love Venus emerged from the swells of the Tyrrhenian Sea, seven gemstones were lost from her crown as the waves crashed all around her. These seven stones became the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago: Elba, Giglio, Capraia, Gorgona, Pianosa, Giannutri and Montecristo. So these are the gems of Tuscany encompassing 600,000 acres making it Europe’s largest marine park. The most famous and largest of these islands is Elba, dominated by nature with its long sandy beaches, small inlets, vertical cliffs, and transparent deep blue sea. The Etruscans mined metals here, to the Romans, it was a destination resort, and to Napoleon it was his home away from home during his exile. We’ll visit small medieval villages, sample local fare rich in genuine flavor, and explore the stunning coastline of white sand, hidden cobblestone beaches, and rugged rock outcroppings. From here, we’ll journey to the heart of Tuscany, a region first inhabited by the ancient Entruscans, who cherished the hills, the land, and the air as a place of sanctuary. For Chiantigianos it is the place to cultivate the grape, harvest the olive, and to savor the sights, sounds, and scent of the hills. For us peregrinators, wayfarers as the Roman tourists called themselves, it will be a delight for the senses and truly an adventure for a lifetime. Our wanderings will lead us to small, family run wineries, peaceful treks in the hills past olive groves and hidden villas. We may be able to mount up on the ubiquitous Vespa motor scooters on a tour of Medieval villages, tasting wine, sampling food, and seeing the sights of the hill country. Our lodgings will be in small family-run Inns with history that goes back generations. We’ll stay a night in the town of many towers, the medieval enclave of San Gimignano. Take the time to roam through its narrow streets, explore its shops, talk to painters, examine fine leather goods, and of course, indulge and imbibe! Gelato and wine are there for the tasting! May 23- June 1, 2008 September 20- September 29, 2008 $3950 per person (8 or more people) $4575 per person (5-7 people) Single supplement $600 Click here for detailed itinerary

The Amalfi Coast of Italy In the Footsteps of the Anceint Roman Tourists: An Adventure by Land and Sea Imagine…paddling through volcanic archways, a glimpse of a precipitous coastline coming into view, and then the full drama of la Costeria Amalfiano before you… its landscape of color, texture, and relief are woven into a dramatic tapestry that permeates the soul. To its first explorers, the ancient Greeks, “psyche”, or soul was associated with breath, and there is no more breath-taking sight than the Amalfi Coast from the seat of a kayak. Voyage with the staff of H2Outfitters and discover the essence of “la dolce vita”. Homer, Greece's epic poet of antiquity, described the wine-dark seas of the Mediterranean, its sounds and the adventure it provided many a Homeric hero. Being blind, his color perception may be a little off, but our adventure to the cool blue waters of the Mediterranean is a destination not to be missed. Step back into the past as we visit ruins from Greece's Helenistic period or the incomparable remains of the cities of Pompei and Herculaneum. This is a land of stark volcanic relief whose rich soils provide for the surrounding framework of lush green foliage and vibrant color. After all, the Amalfi coast has been a destination for tourists since the ancient Romans first hit the road to see their empire. Sun, sand, and ocean breezes were the attraction then, and still offer a magnetic lure to today's vacationer. We will discover hidden grottos and sea-caves, wander solitary mountain trails used by shepherds and their flocks, and after an active day relax in one of the quaint village cafes. This is la dolce vita, the way life should be!

Sea Kayaking the Sacred Sea of Siberia, Russia’s Lake Baikal
The vast expanse of Mother Russia ranges from Eastern Europe to the Bering Sea. At its center is Siberia, a region that encompasses an area from the Arctic Ocean to the Mongolian Plateau. At its southern most point lies the largest freshwater lake on the planet, Lake Baikal…our destination on this exploratory trip. As we head outward bound from the US, our first stop will be the Russian capital, Moscow. A few days here exploring museums, the Kremlin, and the great onion-domed St. Basil’s will acclimate us prior to traveling east into the heart of the Siberian wilderness. This region has always been a cultural crossroads, linking the “mysterious” East to the “civilization” of the West. Known as the Silk Road, it was a conduit for commerce and adventure for explorers of the past and adventurous souls in the present. Leaving Moscow with an understanding of the history of Russia’s Imperial and Proletariat past we will be able to gain a sense of its diversity of culture and civilization upon arrival in its heartland. Here we’ll visit the country’s largest Buddhist enclave, Ivolginsk Datsun, in the city of Ulan Ude, which is the capitol of the Republic of Buryatia. Located on the Mongolian border, Buryatia is the stronghold of the region’s largest ethnic minority, the Buryat people. The lake itself, becomes a metaphor for the region and the country through its biologic diversity. Home to over 1200 species of animals and 1000 species of plants, Baikal is a repository of indigenous life. Among the most unique examples we’ll see are the Phoca Siberica, the only freshwater seal on our planet, also know as the Nerpa. These mammals have been enjoying their waterfront solitude for over 22 million years and apparently thiving! The lake provides them with a multitude of tasty flora and fauna from zoo plankton, small crustaceans, and over 50 species of fish. Of course, such a treasure trove of gustatory delights only serves to attract land-based creatures that can’t pass up a good meal. Ursus Arctos, the Arctic brown bear, the Rangifer Tarandus, the ubiquitous reindeer, and the white-tailed eagle, known by its Latin name as Haliaeetus Albicilla are only a few of the 2500 species that wander its periphery. Of course, as with our Great Lakes the problem of environmental management versus industrial pollution has been an on-going conflict and has only recently been addressed. Our visit here will allow us to see this on-going struggle within the context of an active thriving community of wildlife, varied cultures, and industry at its most dynamic stage. Exploring this part of Russia and experiencing Lake Baikal will undoubtedly be an Adventure for a Lifetime.
