Tune up for Spring: Indoor Pool Programs

Comprehensive Kayak Paddling Series (offered in Maine and NJ - see details below)
Upside down, backwards, sideways and forwards are just some of the ways you can look at this comprehensive program. If you’re a BEGINNING paddler, start you foray into the wet world of kayaking by gaining an immediate comfort level in your boat through exiting the boat when it is upside down. Then discover the concepts behind making a boat do what you want it to do, whether that is to go forward, stop turn or move sideways. You’ll have a chance to explore how the lower body controls much of what your boat does and discover how to prevent yourself from an unanticipated capsize utilizing both the paddle and some body English. Once you have the strokes down, try your hand at a few rescues. Learn how to get yourself or someone else back into the kayak quickly and efficiently in the event of a capsize. Better yet, learn the components of the Eskimo roll, the most efficient self-rescue, which utilizes a combination of the skills and body mechanics that have been previously introduced to you in the series. For the EXPERIENCED paddler, challenge yourself to new limits with your strokes to achieve a finesse, efficiency, and style on the water that will enhance your performance and confidence in open water conditions.

The Basics Class (9AM-4PM)
New to kayaking? Never had a lesson before? Well, then come join us in the Basics Program. An exciting combination of instruction and practice in real conditions, this program is perfect to get you started. After a brief intro on shore to some of the boat lingo and outfitting, we’ll get on the water and learn how to control our kayaks in the most efficient manner. Going forward, steering, stopping, turning, and maybe even moving sideways will be addressed. And, of course, we’ll learn how to get out of, and subsequently back into the kayak, should it decide, on its own accord, to take a dip! But the day is not only instruction – the afternoon provides for a leisurely paddle along the shoreline giving you ample time to ingrain these fundamental strokes and enjoy the local scenery and wildlife from the cockpit of your kayak. (1 day)

Offered Daily, Memorial Day weekend through Labor day Weekend
$125 per person

Combine and Refine (9AM-4PM)
Structured similarly to the Basics Program, the Combine & Refine starts to do just that. By combining your basic strokes with a boat tilt and a little body English, you can achieve greater success in getting your kayak to do what you want it to do in less time and, in many cases, in less space. We’ll introduce you to the support strokes first, high and low braces, before we attempt these fun combinations. We’ll also cover the draw stroke, an important stroke that enables you to move your entire boat sideways which is helpful if you need to pull your boat over to a dock or maybe to slide next to your buddy for a quick snack or a break. After experimenting with these new skills in the morning, we’ll venture on a paddle in the afternoon to reinforce our newly acquired techniques (1 day).

Offered Daily, Memorial Day weekend through Labor day Weekend
$125 per person

Rescues That Work
Plan to get wet in this 3 hour class! We’ll begin with a quick explanation of basic rescue equipment and then jump right in with the rescues. First we’ll start with some assisted rescues where you’ll learn techniques to empty a kayak full of water and then to stabilize it so your buddy can climb back in. After you’ve had a chance to try variations on the assisted rescue, we’ll move on to self rescues. Throughout the course you’ll gain an appreciation for and understanding of the value of your paddling skills and how they relate to rescues. If your strokes are solid, you can prevent many a capsize. However, if you do capsize, it is these same solid strokes that will enable you to perform an efficient rescue.

Handling the Surf Zone
Most kayakers find themselves, at some point or other, putting in or taking out at a beach where there are breakers. Being able to paddle safely through a surf zone requires good paddling skills and an understanding of beach dynamics. Timing is everything and, as your skills and experience in the surf increase you can decide if you want to paddle in between the waves or try to “catch a ride”. Whatever your goal is we will guide you on your way to discovering the techniques, timing, and skills required for safely entering and exiting the surf zone. Practice your bracing skills and boat leans as you ride the wave into shore and then quickly carve back out over the wave to catch some more. Before long, you’ll be addicted and the adrenaline will be surging.

The Basics of Kayak Navigation
Knowing how to read a chart and use a compass is important for coastal paddling, but for many it can be a very complicated and intimidating subject to try and grasp. We will take the stress out of the learning in this 6 hour course as we show you simple, dependable and common sense ways to navigate on the water. It is not as hard or scary…or full of sharp instruments…as you may think! Navigation is actually lots of fun and adds a whole new dimension and appreciation to your time on the water. You’ll learn how to identify water and land features on the chart by their color, symbol, or shape, you’ll learn how to plot a course using tools on the chart, and you’ll learn how to follow that course using your compass. Once you get the hang of it of land, you’ll be ready to give it a try on the water.

Dates: Scheduled by request.

$125 per person.

Includes both classroom time and on-water practical experience.

Introduction to Whitewater Kayaking (2 days)
If you like thrills and excitement of whitewater or are simply looking to improve your paddling and boat handling skills on the ocean, try this out. This two day workshop will introduce you to the fundamentals of currents and how these currents react around obstacles. You’ll learn how to use the power of the current to work to your advantage as you execute maneuvers that take you across the current with minimal effort, known as ferrying. You’ll also learn how to enter and exit the eddies found behind obstacles in a current and use these eddies once again, to your advantage to make progress along your path. Time will be spent on flatwater and on the river, in an environment that will provide you with a solid foundation of boat handling skills.
